In scientific terms fatigue is an inability to sustain a given power output or speed. It is a mismatch between the demand for energy by the exercising muscles and the supply of energy in the form of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

For example a runner will experience fatigue when they are no longer available to maintain their speed. A cyclist will experience fatigue when they are no longer able to maintain a pace etc…

Now that we understand what fatigue is and what causes this, we can develop a strategy that will help delay the onset of fatigue. This is fundamentally important to any endurance athlete as this is ultimately the difference between winning or losing.
